Bachelor Sound Machín (BSM) by Esteban Zarco, 2008

The chain of events known as the Bachelor Sound Machín has come as a surprise even to those who are well aware of the convening power of the savants, those peculiar individuals who operate on an untethered axis of wisdom/stupidity, here we refer to the worker percussions of Divine Skin, Nephew’s bass antics, Tom Drum’s vocal exuberance, ©️sensor’s taciturn leadership and of course the spastic musical mastery of Alex “The king of beautiful” Almanza, the only member of the curious group with artistic training. and his de facto mastermind. This quintet of Mexicans in New York has somehow stumbled upon music that is as harsh as it is sticky.

Like the best garage of yesteryear, BMS transforms its idiocy into art much to the chagrin of the educated and the delight of the unsuspecting – channeling the traditional sounds of Veracruz through the Dadaist outbursts of punk to create an atmosphere appropriate for either slam dancing or to perform human sacrifices. And so it is with high expectations that we watch these cultural cannibals, who – to paraphrase Borges – are a cover band that unfortunately is forced to cover their own material. For example, “Universal Inheritor,” a disco song from Veracruz (jarocha) about “The Son of the World Champion” embodied in a Chinese sculpture “Topo Gigiain” (Topo Gigio is a cute mouse puppet popular in Mexico) in a plaster version with a gold finish.
