When you lose a son, a letter to René by Edilberto Peñaloza

Digital version

When you lose a son, you lose your life. Lupita and me lost our lives. With René’s departure there is no relief, nothing you are told helps you, good faith phrases intended to comfort you, but nothing alleviates the pain of the departure of a being that God sent us to fulfill our marriage. The pain is so deep that we do not know any word to describe this irreparable loss, anyone losing his parents is an orphan, anyone losing his or her spouse is a widow or widower, but there is no term to describe one who loses a son.

René, your mom and I have not been able to overcome this growing pain and, as times go by, everything you did during your short passage through this world comes to our minds.
You gave us huge satisfactions as a kid in basic school, junior high and undergraduate, you stood out for your dedication and perseverance. You climbed to the top wherever you were.
At a human scale, you wholeheartedly shared your time with your fellow mates, and everyone around you keeps an unforgettable image of you, as a friend and as a person you always gave your best. You never skimpped on your huge camaraderie, always ready to give your best, showing a deep affection for everyone.

As a professional, you evidenced your talent through your filmmaking work, as an adolescent, with your music. You shared the wisdom and knowledge acquired in the short time you passed through this world with your friends, teachers and pupils.

Regrettably, God deprived us from your presence while you were so young and denied us the opportunity to enjoy everything that you kept in your mind. This increases our pain, but you are still here among all of us and your presence sheds light on us.

René, son, we miss you so much that whenever we have the opportunity we speak about you and your achievements. Knowing that someday we will share the place where you are now is a bit comforting. We all hold you deeply in our hearts and your departure always saddens us, and so arises the ‘why?’. We were deprived our only son, so young and with such a promising future.
You live and will live in our hearts, we will miss you forever.

See you soon!
Your father.

P.S.

René, wherever you are, I am certain that you know that the tribute given to you by integrating your books, albums and films to the Filmmaking Training Center under the name: The René Peñaloza Galván Collection, is the making of our very dear friend Paulina del Paso. René, I am sure that you join our gratefulness because thanks to her affection and esteem the fulfilment of this dream has been possible, in which your friend Alfredo Loaeza, Director of the Filmmaking Training Center, is also involved, as well as Claudia Prado, Research and Dissemination Manager, Rodrigo Mota, Head of the Heritage and Transit department, and the whole team of the Center. This would not be possible without your invaluable support.

Infinite thanks to all of you. Thanks from the heart.
