Rene Ivan Peñaloza Galvan was born on June 10, 1976, at the Hospital Mexico, in Mexico City.

He was the only son Guadalupe Galvan Mendieta (was born in Juan Aldama, Zacatecas) and Edilberto Peñaloza Arriaga (was born in Toluca, State of Mexico).

According to his mother, Rene was a highly active baby and a child with an insatiable curiosity.

STARTED STUDYING

He attended pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and elementary school at the Irish School (Colegio Irlandes) in Mexico City.

He was a good student and a good reader, his parents said that at the age of eight they found him at three in the morning, sitting on his bed reading Don Quixote. Among his book collection was an Encyclopedia of the Sea which he fully read at a young age.

He moved to San Antonio, Texas, together with his parents, and attended part of elementary school at San Antonio Academy.

He was already bilingual

at the age of 10:

Since he was a child he was interested in the cinematographic art, at family gatherings he organized movie functions to share with his cousins, in addition to staging plays at home.

Back in Mexico he continued studying at the Irish School where he studied high school.

Fond of magic, he learned how to disappear a dollar inside an orange on a trip to Europe.

He inherited the love for music from his father Beto, who integrated a band with his brothers, and an uncle, his mother´s brother.

At the age of 13, together with some schoolmates from the Irish school, he created the musical band.

Often Happens (Suele suceder)

The group participated in a competition in a ‘Televisa’ program and gained a position as one of the final participants. He disputed the first place against the at the time unkown band Molotov. According to the applause-meter the group Often Happens was the winner, however, Molotov won, and because of this, they became a famous group

When he was 18 years old, per his father request, he started studying a degree on Mathematical Physicist at the UNAM. He stood out as the best student in his group, which had 70 students

At the same time, he was studying a degree on Mathematical Physicist, he started studying Filmmaking at the Cinematographic Training Center to in 1995. He joined the Gamborimbos generation. Among his colleagues were: Álvaro Curiel, Mariana Chenillo, Manuel LLaneza, y Paulina del Paso among others.

He convinced his parents that filmmaking was his true passion, so he quit studying his degree in Mathematical Physics.

He was two years away from Mexico and got a bachelor’s degree from the University of Austin Texas, at the School of Film and Television. He met Jennifer Teets and Carlos Garza. Thanks to his excellent grades he got a 100% scholarship.

He wrote and directed his first short film entitle: Dear Anne. He began his creative collaboration with Greg Gilpatrick and the actress Angeles Romero who was his muse, and particpated in other Rene short films. (Records/An Aventure).

Rene got a scholarship with a boarding school to work on the show Diagnosis Murder starring Dick Van Dyke.

He returned to Mexico and joined again the Cinematographic Training Center.

He was chosen to participate in the project Cross Portraits (Retratos Cruzados), an exchange between film schools in Mexico City (CCC), Montreal (INIS) and Argentina (Movie University-Universidad de Cine). He traveled to Montreal and filmed the documentary film Jocelyne.

He filmed his short film An adventure with the participation of Alejandro Parodi and Angeles Romero in 2003. He participated with his short film in a Beirut Festival.

He wrote numerous music reviews for Tower Records as well as cultural reviews for the newspaper Reforma. He translated from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English various artistic texts for the Jumex Foundation and Next Door House (Casa Vecina), among others.

He moved to an apartment downtown Mexico City on Calle de Revillagigedo in 2003. Here he shared a flat with Kelly Coats and Isham Randolph. This space became a meeting point for Rene’s friends to listen to music and watch films from his growing collection of musical and cinematographic jewels

He collaborated as a DJ in the Boarder Mates Project with the alias Mongrel Mix.

He won the IMCINE short film competition with his script. Eggs (Huevos) o-written with the filmmaker Mariana Chenillo. Eggs was shown in Mexico in addition to participating in various international film festivals.

During 2005, together with Paulina del Paso he integrated the collective films The Miniplugs. They created, directed, and curated the cultural project The Panoramic View ; a gallery at a food stand at the Glorieta Insurgentes.

He went to live to New York.

He got a master’s degree in dramatic writing at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, the filmmaker Katie Tibaldi was a schoolmate.

He participated in various film projects as Director, Photographer and Producer. He traveled to Beijing and participated as a photographer in an interview conducted by his friend Heike with the Chinese artist Aiweiwei.

He participated in the concert A Crimson Grail composed and conducted by the composer Rhys Chatham, with the participation of 200 electric guitars, 16 electric basses and percussions on August 8, 2009. The concert was held in Damrosch Park on Manhattan’s Upper West Side as part of Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors Festival.

This same year he integrated the Tin Light Cooperative TLC with filmmakers Keith Miller and Begonia Colomar.

His group of friends was large and varied, very beloved people such as his cousin Cynthia Galvan and Kerri Mcdowell with whom he had a very important relationship were included.

Throughout his professional career he collaborated with various artists and filmmakers including: Iván Edeza, Kelly Coats, Islam Randolph, Ken Bensinger, Jan St Werner, Rosa Barba, Heather Courtney, Mariana Chenillo, Paula Markovitch, Begoña Colomar, Katie Tibaldi and Gabriela Galván, among others.

Rene had a surgery on his spleen. From this experience he wrote and filmed what would be his last short film: Capsule Endoscopy made together with Keith Miller.

On June 4 of the same year, he was admitted to the hospital again. On June 9, he was operated on and detected a liver cancer with metastases in the spine and lungs.

On June 28 at 3:00pm Rene passed away at the age of 34.

His friends and family devastated, by this great loss hold, several tributes in honor of Rene.

In October 2010, Welcome to the World is screened at the Morelia International Festival, presented by Carlos Garza.

In 2011, one year after his death, his parents Edilberto and Lupita inaugurated the Rene Peñaloza Galvan Scholarship. This scholarship consists of a monetary award for an outstanding student of the video career of the Brooklyn College Community Partnership (BCCP). Every year, for five years, a ceremony was held with the support and participation of Diana Reiser, Head of Operations at BCCP, Steve Ausbury, Chief Operating Officer at BCCP and Gabriela Galvan.

Begoña Colomar performed the short film Elegía, made from material directed by Rene which was part of his research for the Eavesdrop project. In this material we can hear Rene’s voice and see him during his creative process.

With the support of Begoña Colomar, Mariana Chenillo, Paulina del Paso, and the Cinematographic Training Center (CCC), the post-production of Osiris and the Jarocho. was performed. The documentary premiered at the District Festival 2012.

Supported by Paulina del Paso, General Director of the CCC and his team René Peñaloza Galvan’s Colletion, integrated by more than 1500 books, 2500 acetates and 350 films, was integrated into the Cinematographic Training Center.

This same year, the website dedicated to the artist, friend and son Rene Peñaloza Galvan was inaugurated; a place to honor his life, remember him and enjoy his endearing and valuable work.
