René Iván Peñaloza Galván was born on June 10, 1976 at the Hospital México, in Mexico City.

Only child of Guadalupe Galván Mendieta (originally from Juan Aldama, Zacatecas) and Edilberto Peñaloza Arriaga (originally from Toluca, State of Mexico).
According to his mother, René was a very alert baby and a child with insatiable curiosity.

A good student and a good reader, his parents say that at the age of eight they found him at three in the morning, sitting on his bed reading Don Quijote. Among his growing collection of books was an Encyclopedia of the Sea that he read in its entirety at a very young age.

Together with his parents he moved to San Antonio Texas and attended part of elementary school at the San Antonio Academy.

Since he was a child, he was interested in cinematographic art, at family gatherings she organizes movie performances to share with her cousins and cousins, as well as putting on plays at home.

At the age of 18, at the request of his father, he began his university career as a Mathematical Physicist at UNAM. He stands out as the best student in his group with 70 students.

In 1995, in parallel to his career as a Mathematical Physicist, he entered the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica to study the career of Filmmaking. Joins the generation Gamborimbos. Among his companions are: Álvaro Curiel, Mariana Chenillo, Manuel LLaneza, y Paulina del Paso among others.

René wins an internship to work on the show Diagnosis Murder starring Dick Van Dyke
This year he returned to Mexico and rejoined the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica.
He is chosen to participate in the Crossed Portraits project, an exchange between film schools in Mexico City (CCC), Montreal (INIS) and Argentina (Universidad de Cine). Travel to Montreal and film the documentary Jocelyne.

Films the thesis short A sudden affair where they participate Alejandro Parodí and Ángeles Romero. He travels to a Beirut Festival with his short.
He writes numerous music reviews for Tower Records as well as cultural reviews for the periódico Reforma. He translates from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English various artistic texts for Fundación Jumex and Casa Vecina, among others.
He moves to an apartment in the Mexico City center on Revillagigedo street. Here he shares a flat with Kelly Coats and Isham Randolph. This space becomes a meeting point for René’s friends to listen to music and watch movies from his growing collection of musical and cinematographic jewels.

During 2005, together with Paulina del Paso forms the collective Los Miniplugs. They create, direct and curate the cultural project El Mirador; a gallery inside a food stall located in the Insurgentes Roundabout.

On August 8, 2009 he participated in the concert A Crimson Grail composed and conducted by the composer Rhys Chatham, with the participation of 200 electric guitars, 16 electric basses and percussions. This concert was held in Damrosch Park in the Upper West Side of Manhattan as part of Out of Doors Festival of Lincoln Center.
This same year it forms the Tin Light Cooperative TLC with the filmmakers Keith Miller and Begonia Colomar.
His group of friends is vast, he is joined by very dear people like his cousin Cynthia Galván y Kerri Mcdowell with whom he had a very important relationship.
Throughout his professional career he collaborates with various artists and filmmakers, including: Iván Edeza, Kelly Coats, Islam Randolph, Ken Bensinger, Jan St Werner, Rosa Barba, Heather Courtney, Mariana Chenillo, Paula Markovitch, Begoña Colomar, Katie Tibaldi and Gabriela Galván, among others.

René undergoes surgery from the glass. From this experience he writes and films what would be his last short film: Capsule Endoscopy made together with Keith Miller.
On June 4 of the same year, he was admitted to the hospital again. On June 9, he was operated on and detected a liver cancer with metastases in the spine and lungs.

On June 28 at 3:00 pm René passed away at the age of 34.
His friends and family devastated by this great loss carry out several tributes in honor of René.

In 2011, one year after his death, the Scholarship René Peñaloza Galván is inaugurates at the initiative of their parents Edilberto y Lupita. This scholarship consists of a monetary award for an outstanding student of the video career of the Brooklyn College Community Partnership (BCCP). Every year, for five years, a ceremony is held with the support and participation of Diana Reiser Head of Operations at BCCP, Steve Ausbury Operational Director at BCCP and Gabriela Galván.

Begoña Colomar make the short film Elegía, made from material directed by René as part of his research for the Eavesdrop project. In this material appear the voice and image of René whom we see in their creative process.
With the support of Begoña Colomar, Mariana Chenillo, Paulina del Paso and the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC) it make the post-production of Osiris y el Jarocho. The documentary premieres at the 2012 District Festival. It wins the José Rovirosa award.
